A Ceilidh band specialises in performing upbeat melodies of Scottish and Irish (ceili) Gaelic folk music. They focus on getting the whole crowd dancing and tapping their feet along to their tunes. Ceilidh bands range from small groups of musicians to very large ensembles with all different kinds of instruments. Many ceilidh bands feature accordions, pipes, guitars, fiddles, piano, and drums. They can either play acoustically or be amplified by a PA.
One of the best things about a ceilidh band is that it often includes a caller. A caller is essentially someone who teaches your guests dance routines that go with the songs. They will call out reminders throughout each song, ensuring that you're able to understand the various dances and keep up with the fun! There are many types of dances that accompany ceilidh. Whether you are slowly waltzing or doing fast-paced stomping, a ceilidh will offer an amazing opportunity to have your guests let loose and dance!
Ceilidh bands play traditional Scottish, Irish ceili and traditional English folk music. This usually means lively dance music alongside slower waltzes. Generally guests are encouraged to dance along. They're likely to play any of a range of traditional tunes, including: The Boston Two-Step, The Scottish Waltz and the Highland Schottische.
1. Scottish ceilidh bands and and Irish ceili bands and English ceilidh bands Depending on your preference with tunes, both Scottish Ceilidh and Irish Ceili bands usually play traditional Scottish and Irish music. They are formed of anything from 2 to 8 and more musicians These bands incorporate a variety of traditional instruments, and are usually acoustic. The music they play will range from slow waltzes to fast polkas and everything in-between. With a traditional ceilidh band, they often also provide a 'caller' who helps to guide your guests through each dance.
2. Crossover bands: ceilidh-rock or ceilidh-pop bands While traditional Ceilidh bands bring a certain spark to a party, some people are more interested in Rock or Pop bands that offer a Ceilidh flare. While they want both a 'caller' and dance moves, they also might want some more contemporary hits that audiences might enjoy. If you're planning a wedding, a ceilidh band can provide lively entertainment for the evening reception, and can start the party by performing for the bride and groom's first dance, before all the guests take to the floor. A ceilidh band can welcome or 'pipe in' the happy couple, to their wedding breakfast, if required too.
Ceilidh's are a common way to celebrate any occasion, and an excellent choice for a Hogmanay celebration, a private or corporate Burns supper or a Saint Patrick's Day party where a big, lively event is called for.
If you are hosting an event where people may be meeting each other for the first time, like a wedding, then a ceilidh wedding band is a fantastic ice breaker. Ceilidh bands can encourage all different amounts of people to dance and enjoy themselves.
If you want an all-inclusive feel to your dance floor, then a ceilidh band is the perfect choice for your event.
The amount of space needed for a ceilidh band is entirely dependent on the line-up you select. If you have a ceilidh duo or trio, then they will require far less space then a larger 5 to 8-piece ceilidh band. If space is limited for your venue, then we recommend reaching out to the ceilidh band and seeing if you can request a smaller lineup to play.
Please keep in mind, that outside of a stage for the ceilidh band, you will also need space for your audience to dance. Ceilidh is often partner based, so your dance floor should reflect that. Of course, you will need plenty of room to swing your partner around on the dance floor!
