Q&A with the P.Y.Ts

09/11/2016
  • The P.Y.T's have been on Headliner from the very beginning, and they are one of the sites most popular party bands. They've played at amazing events, such as Facebook's Christmas party at Abbey Road Studios! We've been speaking with Henry, who runs the band, about working as a bandleader and session musician, as well as what it takes to be a successful function band...

  • Take us through a typical day when you have a gig with The P.Y.T’s?

Whenever we have a gig we like to get in to the venue early. This is key to make sure everything is running smoothly and we're sounding the best we can.

  • What do you think makes the P.Y.T’s such a successful band?

I think experience is a major factor in success. Our musicians have played all over the world in all types of musical situations. This means they bring a level of musicianship and professionalism to every event that not many bands can say they have.

  • What is the most difficult thing about being a band leader?

In the past when I've worked as a band leader on behalf of other people it's been organising the musicians that's been the toughest challenge. However, with the P.Y.T's everyone is simply on the same page and knows what is expected, so that completely eliminates that issue.

  • Alternatively what is the most rewarding part about being a band leader?

The energy of a good crowd and seeing the client have a good time is definitely the most rewarding thing about what we do.

  • How did you guys start and how long have you been playing together?

The core band members met over 10 years ago at an audition for another function band, and we've been playing together ever since!

  • What did you find most challenging when you first started working as a bandleader?

Finding out what songs crowds respond well to was the most challenging part about starting out. This is a craft we have mastered now as a band and we can easily read an audience on the fly.

  • You work both as a session drummer and as the P.Y.T's band leader. What’s the main difference between your two roles?

As a band leader my main job is to keep the client happy and as a session musician your job is to keep the artist happy. In some cases this can be a lot more difficult as the artist does not always know what they want. Whereas clients normally know ahead of time what they're looking for, which makes my life a lot easier.

  • Do you have any tips for musicians who are entering the world of function and session work?

Enter every situation with an open mind and a smile on your face. The industry and your career will have many ups and downs and you can't let the bad times get on top of you. You need to stay positive, put yourself out there and try enjoy the hustle!
