Dere Street is a 4 piece band hailing from the Scottish Borders. The name derived from the ancient Roman road that runs from York to Perth, and passes through Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. This name was fitting as the 2 founding members (Gary and Keith) hail from Northumberland and Perthshire respectively. They both now settled in the Scottish Borders where their love for music has brought them together. The band describe themselves as a roots Celtic folk band, bringing together elements of Celtic songs from the British Isles and Ireland. Stuart and Andrew joined the band in the form of more modern instruments more associated with rock style music to bring and new dimension to the band yet still maintaining the folk roots throughout their compositions. The band has reworked the likes of Burns and Christie Moore songs to make a more modern feel to their original works. Also their self-penned work has a tongue and accent of the Border Countries between England and Scotland.
We can categorise or set into 3 streams:
1: Power Ceilidh - We perform the most popular Ceilidh dances and are able to call the steps so everybody can join in. We use the Highland Bagpipe and instruments like electric Guitar and drum kit to make this a high energy style of Ceilidh.
2. Folk and Celtic - We can play full set of Folk and Celtic Style music that are reworked traditional or self penned by our selves. Again we may rock some of these up or keep the more traditional side of folk to them. This giving us our signature of our band.
We combine our folk/celtic numbers during our Ceilidh to give the participants a rest between dancing.
3. Rock n Roll - We also provide an set of Rock n roll classics that can be used to break up our set to allow for some boogieing or jiving. Examples of these are: Rock around the clock, Proud Mary
Amarillo, Shake rattle and roll, Hound dog, Rock around the clock, Can't buy me love, Stray cat strut, Johnny B Goode
